urArtistnetwork: March 10th you’ll be playing in The Factor Breakthrough Series for Canadian Music Week. What have you got rolled up your sleeves?

Christopher: All of our focus for the past few months has been around making a record. We haven’t played a show in 2011 yet so this is very rare for us. Canadian Music Week will be our first 2011 show and we’re hoping to come with a bunch of new material.

urArtistnetwork: Can you briefly describe the music making process? (Since you’re working on it right now)

Christopher: In terms of the music making process, it’s really a collaborative effort. It’s usually Jonathan from the band who comes with a song; usually an acoustic folk song that we then take to turn into something similar or very different. It’s a slow process. It’s fun, its stressful; it’s different than the two years in between. It’s definitely an interesting process to see these songs really come to life and take up all these different shapes and versions really. It’s definitely interesting and definitely challenging.

urArtistnetwork: How would you say your music has evolved since you first began playing music together?

Christopher: Our music evolved as the band has evolved. When we started with Amos The Transparent back in 2006, it was Jon and myself simply taking his songs and turning them into something else. That was the beginning and now it’s become, like I said more of a collaborative effort. It’s a group of five or six of us that really make these songs what they are today and it has become more of a group effort as opposed to two of us sitting together making music. It’s totally taken a different life and it’s definitely for the better. It’s always evolving. Every record seems to be different. Every record goes a new direction for us. Its really cool and I’m really excited about these new ones that we’re working on.

urArtistnetwork: As you’ve been together for quite some time, what has been your biggest challenge as a band? Have you been able to overcome that challenge? If so, how?

Christopher: I think we’ve done a great job of some things, but we’ve also done a bad job getting into certain markets and that’s always the challenge – going and playing to very few people and just being persistent and keeping up the hard work is one of the hardest things. I think we’ve overcome it. We’ve travelled the 401 so many times that now things are starting to turn around for us a little bit and always improving. Playing and getting to know people is one of the challenges any band. You just keep on working hard on it and it really starts to get better.

urArtistnetwork: What advice do you have for people who want to form their own bands?

Christopher: Do it. If you love it, do it. The moments you spend playing songs to people and hearing them come to life is one of the most rewarding things. If you have a true love for it, it feels so right. There are only a few other things that compare to the feeling of playing music – and that’s family & kids. That’s what I would compare to making music. It’s such a good feeling to get on stage and have people react and smile and really embrace what you’re doing on stage. I would encourage anyone and everyone to do it but don’t think anything is going to come easy because there are always going to be challenges. It’s always going to be an uphill battle and there’s going to be so many sacrifices that you’ll have to make. It is definitely worth it.

urArtistnetwork: Absolutely! Amos have certainly come a long way. Any last words?

Christopher: Our record will come out Summer 2011! In terms of Canadian Music Week – come check it out! We’ll be playing a bunch of new stuff. Stay tuned for upcoming shows. There might be some surprises of fun in the next few months coming. Keep your ears to the ground!
