AUX Weekly is featuring an incredible live performance by the amazing Jay Sparrow this week.

In this video for “The Dark” Jay Sparrow tells you a story and you can’t help but listen as his aged guitar and weary voice capture your hearts and ears. It is easy to picture a packed venue being pin-drop silent as Sparrow takes the stage to tell his tale. Watch the video and you’ll understand:

Congratulations to Jay Sparrow who earned a coveted spot on Herohill’s Favorite Canadian EPs of 2010! Sparrow’s 2009 release Good Days Gone By earned the number seven spot. Jay Sparrow (VUE Weekly)

“When Jay Sparrow sings of trouble in his heart on the opener of his latest solo EP, it’s hard not to believe him: it sounds like he’s clawing his way out of the rough, muscles straining with every inch closer to the clear. But clear isn’t where Sparrow is here. No, his struggle is still very much evident in the songs he’s penned for The Tempest Line, and it’s the conflict that makes this record so compelling. Sparrow’s come a long way from the modern rock of his old band the Murder City Sparrows, and this new stomping ground suits him well, his songwriting on a distinct upswing as he mines new, rootsier territory while fusing the sound with a rough-and-tumble punk esthetic.” -(VUE Weekly)

Murder City Sparrows (On The Danforth)

“Adopting the album’s title as their name, the four musicians developed a powerful brand of rock’n’roll without over-production… and it’s that raw passion that makes their self-titled debut stand out.” – Emma Woolley (On The Danforth)

Murder City Sparrows (NOW Magazine)

“Not exactly subtle in their delivery, Edmonton’s Jay Sparrow and band play whiskey-soaked ‘Texas punk’ odes to their own demons. On their new album, produced by Gordie Johnson of Big Sugar fame and recorded at Willie Nelson’s own studio in Austin Texas, the Sparrows mix the red-headed stranger’s storytelling with plenty of fire and energy.” – NOW Magazine (Toronto)

The Murder City Sparrows were one of Edmonton’s most notorious bands. Founded by Jay Sparrow  the four-piece punk outfit released one self-titled  EP and the full length album Dead Horse Disco, both produced by Gordie Johnson (Grady, Big Sugar).

Although they received national radio and video play (with all videos by the award winning director Michael Maxxis) the band is currently on hiatus as Jay continues his solo journey. Joining Jay in his solo endeavour is fellow Sparrow Doc De Groot. Don’t be too surprised to see Murder City Sparrows once again rock a stage or two.
